In August, Jack attended a VW show held at the local VW repair shop, owned by Bill Trafton. Since we knew in advance about the opportunity and Bill is a fellow Christian, we thought this would be a great opportunity for community impact.
Jack took with him 40 nice pairs of sunglasses and 18 bottles of car wax to distribute (all provided by Renaissance at no cost to him). It was a real pleasure. I'll paraphrase the story he told...
When Jack opened up the back end of his beautiful VW Panel Van and set out the boxes with the free signs, people were leery. He said it took quite a while for people to come see if they were really free.
Finally, someone came and asked him about it. Jack responded that yes, they really were free gifts, with no strings attached. That led to the obvious question of why he was giving out gifts. Jack directed them to the cards attached. On one side, they said, "yes it's really free... it's our simple way of saying God Loves You" and on the other side was contact information for our church.
Jack reported that it led to questions about the church without any discomfort. Unlike street preaching, you aren't pursuing them, they ask you. Unlike passing out tracts, you aren't pushing something at them, they're requesting things of you. And then they naturally ask questions. It's a great conversation starter.
Once people started showing interest, Jack was out of free gifts in no time flat. And everyone enjoyed the process.
Oh, and by the way, the Panel Van won a trophy, too.
